Meruorah and Plaza Marina Strengthen Tourism Safety Standards in Labuan Bajo Through Fire Drill Training

The training, conducted in collaboration with the Fire Department (Damkar) of West Manggarai Regency, involved approximately 60 employees from both business units.

The objective of the training was to equip staff with the technical skills and calm mindset needed when responding to fire-related emergencies.

“Guest and employee safety is a non-negotiable priority. At Meruorah, we do not only offer comfort, but also a sense of security. Through the involvement of our employees in routine drills like this, we ensure that every individual is able to respond to emergencies calmly and systematically, allowing even the smallest risks to be mitigated from the very beginning,” said Rudy H. Butar Butar, General Manager of Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo.

The activity began with a theoretical session delivered by professional firefighters. Participants were provided with an in-depth understanding of the basic theory of fire (the Fire Triangle), how to identify different types of fires, and the proper response procedures.

Following the theoretical session, the training continued with hands-on field practice, which included:

  • Fire extinguisher usage (APAR – Portable Fire Extinguishers): teaching the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) using various media such as powder and CO₂ extinguishers.

  • Traditional fire suppression methods: simulating fire control using wet burlap sacks to handle small-scale fires, such as kitchen gas leaks.

  • Evacuation simulation: procedures for guiding guests and colleagues safely and orderly toward the designated assembly point.

  • Fire department heavy equipment operations: demonstrations of hose usage and coordination procedures when fire trucks arrive at the scene.

This Fire Drill training is part of a regular program and serves as an integral component of the safety management system at Meruorah and Plaza Marina.

Through active collaboration with relevant authorities such as the West Manggarai Fire Department, both business units ensure that emergency preparedness is not merely a written procedure, but a deeply embedded workplace culture for every staff member.

This preventive initiative further reinforces the position of Meruorah and Plaza Marina as destinations that not only offer luxury, but also uphold the highest safety standards in the heart of Labuan Bajo.
